An Awkward Dinner

When Nick goes out to East Egg to meet up with his cousin, Daisy and some other friends for dinner.  When he arrives, Daisy's husband Tom greets Nick at the front door. While enjoying their dinner the phone rings, Tom leaves the table to answer it, after Daisy leaves the room to follow him, Jordan, a pro-golfer informs Nick that it is Tom's friend in New York. She explains it is not so much a friend as it is the woman he is cheating on Daisy with. If Daisy knows Tom is cheating on her why doesn't she leave him? The biggest factor is money. Daisy likes being married to the extremely wealthy Tom Buchana. More importantly, why would Tom interrupt dinner to answer the phone. If he had stayed and continued dinner things would not have turned out to be as awkward as they did. Fitzgerald's theme in this part of the book is materialism. If Daisy was not so greedy of money she would have left Tom by now. However, because she enjoys being wealthy she will not leave him. My prediction is that Daisy will continue on with Tom and Tom will continue on with his "lover" in New York. I think that Nick may and try to talk Daisy out of being with Tom.
